Missoula's American Legion Post 101 prepares for Veterans Day

MISSOULA, Mont. - American Legion Post 101 in Missoula kicks off Veterans Day celebrations at the Doughboy statue at the Courthouse Sunday.

Vietnam Veteran Dan Gallagher is preparing for the event.

Gallagher and his son Brian gather flags and decorations for the annual observance.

The public is invited to place  a flower provided by Post 101 on an honor table to recognize their own special vets.

The theme for this year's celebration is "You don't have to die to be a hero."

"Memorial day we remember those who died in battle, " said Gallagher,
"but Veterans Day is really about all veterans," he said.+

Missoula's Veterans Day observances start at 1 o'clock Sunday.

That's a change from the usual 11 o'clock schedule held on most Veterans Days.

Gallagher said since the holiday fell on a Sunday, the later time gives people a chance to get home from church.

Speaking at Sunday's event includes U.S. Senator Jon Tester, and former U.S. Senator John Melcher.

The main speaker is Missoula's fourth judicial district court standing master Brenda Desmond.
