Missoula fire guts garage

MISSOULA, Mont. - A garage fire completely gutted a structure at 2514 Schilling Street near Southgate Mall.

The call came in around 9 a.m. after neighbors noticed smoke and flames pouring out of the building.

Three engine companies, a unit from Missoula Rural Fire, ambulance services and Missoula police responded. They had the blaze contained by 9:30 a.m.

Fire hoses and equipment blocked off the 2500-block of Schilling Street as well as Dearborn Avenue, and the intersection of Kemp and Livingston.

While bystanders were initially worried that the owner may have been inside, no injuries occurred.

Neighbors say the garage was filled with recreation equipment like off-road vehicles and thousands of dollars worth of tools.   A pickup truck parked in front of the garage was totaled as flames shot out the garage door. The Missoula Fire Department estimates the total damage at $85,000.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.
