Missoula falls short in final push for social media symposium


MISSOULA, Mont. - By a margin of 3,014 votes, Missoula missed out on the opportunity to host the Social Media Tourism Symposium (SoMeT13US) Tuesday. The decision was made in a head-to-head matchup between Missoula and Huntsville, Alabama.

Huntsville will host the symposium the first week of November, after tallying 13,769 votes to Missoula's 10,755.

Missoula beat out Branson, Missouri and Grand Rapids, Michigan, in earlier voting rounds, and came in second place in overall voting in the first round.

The Garden City was no match for Huntsville, which brought in the highest vote numbers in every round, including a landslide victory over Cleveland, Ohio, last week.

Businesses and organizations around Missoula kept busy trying to get out the word about the competition over the past several weeks.

Tourism coordinators say the symposium could bring in about $250,000 to the host city's economy, as well as exposure from 300 to 400 social media influencers.
