Local shops expect big business on Small Business Saturday

MISSOULA, Mont. - Saturday is the retail holiday known as Small Business Saturday.

Local store owners say they know shoppers will still have energy left over from Black Friday and tomorrow they are expecting busy shops filled with folks checking out local deals.

It's a day when consumers are encouraged to support small businesses and some local businesses in Missoula are offering deals many can't refuse.

Local shop owners say buying local benefits both the shopper and the store owner and that buying merchandise from smaller Montana businesses will help to boost the local economy.

Glenn Parks is an employee at The Artists Shop in downtown Missoula and he says shopping local gives people a better opportunity to visit the Missoula community.

"The local people will often times bring their guests to the downtown area to shop because it gives them a Missoula experience," said Parks.

Parks says shopping local gives people the chance to give unique and creative gifts they otherwise wouldn't find at box stores.

"If you give a very personal gift, the person who receives it is going to think of you more often than they would if you were to give them a mass-produced gift," said Parks.

The concept of Small Business Saturday was created by American Express a couple of years ago

The credit card company offers customers a $25 credit if they enroll their card and spend at least $25 at a small business on Saturday.
