Griz drop conference opener to NAU

MISSOULA, Mont. - The Montana Grizzly football team opened up conference play Saturday night on the road at Northern Arizona with a 34-16 loss.

It was all about the Lumberjacks in the first half. NAU running back Zach Bauman started the game out with a 41 yard touchdown to put the Lumberjacks up 7-0 early in the first quarter. Bauman racked up 92 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns in the first half and finished the game with 118 yards on 21 carries.

Just before halftime the Griz offense found themselves in scoring territory but quarterback Jordan Johnson was hit and fumbled the ball. Northern Arizona recovered the ball and returned it 98 yards for a defensive touchdown giving them a 21-3 lead at the half.

Things didn't get any easier for Montana in the 2nd half. Just one minute into the half Travon Van coughed up the ball and once again the Lumberjacks recovered the ball and returned it for another defensive score giving them a 28-3 lead. UM was never able to get momentum on their side and NAU controlled the tempo of the second half of the game. Montana scored 13 points in  the 4th quarter but it wasn't enough as they fell to Northern Arizona 34-16.

The Grizzlies will be back in action Saturday October 5th when they host Portland State in a conference match.
