MISSOULA, Mont. - Many people in Missoula have a better understanding of homelessness after watching a documentary at the Crystal Theater Monday evening.
Several Missoula agencies worked together to bring filmmaker Diane Nilan to Missoula, citing statistics that show more than 300 children were homeless at some point last school year in the Missoula County Public School District, and that rates have increased 33 percent.
Nilan's work shows homeless children in 34 states, underscoring it is a chronic problem in most communities. In addition to showing the film, Nilan discussed her work and answered questions from the audience.
A panel of representatives from community agencies also talked about what family homelessness looks like in Missoula.
Next, Nilan will travel to the Blackfeet Reservation to further her discussion on homelessness.
