MISSOULA, Mont. - The company that owns the former Kmart building in Missoula plans to raze it and construct buildings to house a Cabela's Outpost and a Kohl's Department Store.
The new tenants were announced in a memo about the project that Woodbury Corp. of Salt Lake City presented to the Missoula Redevelopment Agency board on May 15.
Woodbury project manager Darrin Smith says demolition is set to begin June 1, but he declined to confirm the names of the tenants.
The $24.5 million retail construction project, called South Crossing, will also include three smaller buildings. The former Montana Homefitters building also on the property will be renovated and broken into two smaller spaces. No word on which retailers will lease the five spots, but Smith and the director of Missoula Redevelopment Agency, Ellen Buchanan, say there is lots of interest.
Buchanan says that in addition to all of the retail spaces, sidewalks and landscaping in the area will enhance the Brooks Street Corridor.
"We'll be able to put in new boulevard sidewalks along there with hopefully some street trees, and we'll get sidewalks on Dore Lane," said Buchanan. "They're going to demolish the entire parking lot and put back a parking lot with a fair amount of landscaping in it as the codes require, so I think you'll see a pretty radical transformation of that area."
Buchanan says the new South Crossing retail complex will set the mark for future developments in the area.
Woodbury expects the new businesses will create over 400 new full-time, part-time and seasonal jobs.
Construction should be complete by the end of 2013.
