MISSOULA, Mont. - There's a great deal of alcohol-free entertainment all over Missoula. It's the 20th annual First Night. It's music, dance, theater, you name it.
150 to 175 volunteers work on First Night. They got an early start.
With dozens of entertainment venues slated all over town, organization is essential.
Susan Hancock's been volunteering at First Night for 15 years.
"It's a fun, family oriented event," said Hancock.
The acts are scheduled from noon to midnight.
"We have about 90 different acts and activities going on in about 25 venues," said Tom Bensen, executive director of the Missoula Cultural Council.
The hat decorating contest at Southgate Mall was one of the earlier events in the day. It was for kids. Six-year-old Elizabeth Cornelius was decorating her orange fedora and wished everybody a happy new year.
Across town, the Cat in the Hat made an appearance.
So did the Montana Super Skippers, a jump roping group.
Craig Barrier came to watch. "It's a great option," said Barrier.
