Whitefish council discusses tax for Flathead dispatch

KALISPELL, Mont. - Whitefish officials are discussing a new tax for the county's emergency dispatch center.

The Whitefish City Council held a public hearing at their meeting Monday night to inform and discuss the potential new tax. The city is considering adding a special district tax with a $25 residential fee and $50 commercial flat fee.

In 2009, Flathead County consolidated all agencies' dispatches to a new facility in Kalispell.

"Communications, we've definitely seen improvement.  We use mobile data terminals so we can actually read the 9-1-1 screen.  That's helped us with getting to locations a lot quicker, we don't have to ask for directions in some cases where it's a difficult location to reach," said Fire Chief Tom Kennelly

Whitefish City Manager Chuck Stearns says Flathead County Commissioners are considering putting the issue on the November ballot.
