KALISPELL, Mont. - The owner of a vandalized Kalispell medical clinic says she's taking time off before deciding if she'll reopen her doors.
Susan Cahill's clinic, All Families Health Care, was vandalized during the night on March 3.
Two days later, police arrested Zachary Klundt. Now he's charged with multiple counts of burglary and theft related to All Families Health Care and other Kalispell area businesses.
Cahill says 95 percent of the items in her clinic were destroyed. Now, community members are raising money to help cover some of the expense, and they've already gone beyond their goal.
"I really don't know what I'm going to do," said Cahill when asked about reopeing her clinic. "But it's not an easy decision."
Cahill is still picking up what remains of her Kalispell clinic. Along with every day health care, it provides first trimester abortions, and was vandalized as part of what she believes to be a hate crime.
"The thoroughness that this person took to ruin everything was almost unfathomable to me, frankly," Cahill said.
Cahill says word of the attack spread quickly, and the help and support she has received is overwhelming. Some of that help came from community groups that started a fundraiser to help pay the bills.
Maggie Moran works for NARAL Pro-Choice Montana, a reproductive rights group. She helped start the fundraiser.
Organizers set a goal to raise $25,000 by April 13. But by 4 p.m. Tuesday, they had close to $59,000, with the hope of more on the way.
"This fundraiser has really made a statement against violence and against intimidation, regardless of what your feelings are about a legal health care service," said Moran.
But even with help to pick up the pieces and pay the bills, Cahill's unsure if she'll open her doors again.
"Even if I were to open up an office and not provide abortion services, I'm not quite sure that would matter. So I have to take the summer. I've been traumatized and I have to take the summer to decide which way I want to go," Cahill said.
