Equine-assisted therapy comes to the Flathead

KALISPELL, Mont. - Kalispell's Little Bitty Ranch is branching out to help folks using equine-assisted psychotherapy. The Stable Place program at the ranch combines the mental and physical aspects of therapy into one, as participants interact with horses on the ground.

By developing a relationship with a horse, counselors said it can help an individual overcome obstacles and achieve a goal. While this form of counseling can assist many with emotional and behavioral issues, organizers said the most recent success has been seen in veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

"It's ground-focused, no riding," said Dawn Brennan. "Just is an interactive process during the session. We are the first in the Flathead Valley and are really looking forward to partnering with service organizations and providers to really build this as a viable option with their clients."
