KALISPELL, Mont. - According to the Montana Highway patrol, the first week in July is one of the busiest and most dangerous weeks of the year to be on Montana roadways.
Sergeant Randy Owens of the Montana Highway Patrol told us that the holiday week of July 4th is one of the busiest of the year for Montana roads due to the holiday.
While Montana Highway Patrol says that this week hasn't been much busier than years past, they have seen an increase in accidents this year and want people to drive carefully on the roads.
Owens also told us that anytime there is nice weather for the holiday, more people travel and with more people on the road, there's an increase in incidents.
"Just drive safely and leave plenty of distance and kind of drive watching out for the other guy too," said Owens. "You just never know when and where it can happen. If somebody's coming into your lane, feel free to call 911 or highway patrol if you have to."
In the first week of July alone, Sergeant Owens told us that district 6 of the Montana Highway Patrol, which runs from Polson up to Kalispell, saw 30 DUI's.
They responded to 150 car accidents or crashes as well as close 1,200 traffic stops or incidents.
