Avalanche beacon checkers added to Big Mountain

WHITEFISH, Mont. - Two new avalanche beacon checkers have been installed near backcountry entrances. The Flathead National Forest launched the Are You Beeping? campaign last month with three stations set up near popular snowmobile locations.

Over the weekend, the Flathead Nordic Ski Patrol helped set up the new beacon checkers on Big Mountain. One is at the Lazy Man's Traverse at Flower Point, the second is on Taylor Creek Road in Hellroaring Basin.

The posters light up to demonstrate if the beacon is working properly. Green means good to go, a red "X" means the beacon is not transmitting.
