HELENA, Mont. -

Montana Supreme Court Associate Justice Jim Rice says he will see re-election in 2014.

The former Republican state legislator from Havre has served on the court since 2001.

Rice told Lee Newspapers of Montana that he wants to ensure that the court doesn't legislate from the bench. He says he has helped moderate the court.

Rice also says that the courts need to be careful about government expansion infringing on individual liberties.

Justice Mike Wheat is also up for re-election, but has not announced his intentions.

Another vacancy could open up if the U.S. Senate confirms Justice Brian Morris to the federal bench.
