Superintendent Denise Juneau announced Longfellow Elementary School in Bozeman and Anaconda High School have been nominated for the 2014 National Blue Ribbon Schools Award. The Blue Ribbon Schools program honors elementary and secondary schools that made significant progress in closing the achievement gap or whose students achieve at very high levels.
Longfellow Elementary School has been nominated in the Exemplary High-Performing School category. “High performing” means (a) that the achievement of the school’s students in the most recent year tested places the school among the highest performing schools in the state on state assessments of reading and mathematics, and (b) disaggregated results for student subgroups, including students from disadvantaged backgrounds, must be similar to the results for all students tested.
Anaconda High School has been nominated in the category of Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools. In order to be nominated, a school must: (a) be in the top 15 percent of all schools in the state for both reading and mathematics based on its progress in closing achievement gaps over the past five years, (b) be in the top 40 percent of all schools in the state for the performance in both reading and mathematics in each of the school’s subgroups, (c) be in the top 40 percent of high school graduation rates in the state for the graduation rate of each of a high school’s subgroups, and (d) demonstrate the change in the performance of all tested students in the school over the past five years is not less than the change in the performance of all tested students in the state in both reading and mathematics.
"The communities of Bozeman and Anaconda should be very proud of the hard work of their teachers, students, school leaders and parents," said Superintendent Juneau. "Montana's Blue Ribbon schools are national models for how to achieve success and are a reflection of our statewide commitment to providing every child with a quality public education."
The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program is an effort to identify and share knowledge about the best school leadership and teaching practices and sets a standard of excellence for all schools striving for the highest level of achievement.
