A hero dog was injured over the weekend in Missoula while protecting its master from a charging moose.
UM student Jane McNeill tells us she was hiking with her dogs Sunday on Blue Mountain when a moose emerged from the woods, running at full speed straight toward her.
McNeill says her first instinct was to run, but when she looked back, she saw that the two dogs she was hiking with both stood their ground, barking at the charging moose.
One of the dogs was head-butted in the ribs, McNeill said. That’s when the other dog, Manny, clamped down on the moose’s snout with his jaw.
"I didn't know what I was supposed to do. I just ran,” said McNeill. “I still can't believe that (Manny) actually did that. The other (dog) barked and stood her ground too, but he full-on bit (the moose) in the face and wouldn't let it come near me."
McNeill says the bite was enough to convince the moose to retreat, but not before landing a kick to Manny’s head.
McNeill says Manny suffered a cut above his eye and severe swelling, but after a trip to the vet, he has made close to a full recovery.
Blue Mountain was the site of a similar incident in 2013. A woman hiking with several dogs was injured by a moose as she tried to pull her dogs away from the animal.
