HELENA, Mont. -

A 19-year-old Helena man has denied a dozen arson charges filed for a series of wildfires set around Helena last month.

District Judge Jeffrey Sherlock denied a request to reduce the $100,000 bail set for Frederick James Maw V.

Public defender Chad Glenn argued Thursday that Maw's detention amounted to punishment before a finding of guilty because Maw had no assets to post bond. Sherlock said he was concerned about the serial, intentional nature of the crimes.

Maw, a former volunteer fireman, is charged with setting fires on May 10 near Priest Pass west of Helena and on May 15 in the York area north of Helena. He was arrested while helping fight one of the fires.

Sherlock set an Aug. 26 trial date.
