MISSOULA, Mont. -

Catholic parishioners in Ravalli County are trying to understand what appears to be senseless vandalism dealt to St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church over the weekend.

A parishioner called police at roughly 4:00 p.m. Saturday to report the church had been vandalized.

When police arrived on the scene they found vandals had destroyed the church's glass altar, damaged the piano and a kneeler and broke a number of other sacred items.

Hamilton Police tell us they have a 23-year-old Hamilton woman in custody who they was seen outside the church on Saturday knocking over trash cans.

Saturday a resident called police and gave them a description of the woman and police tell us they were able to locate the suspect based on that description.

The church is still figuring the cost of the damage.

Police say the 23-year-old suspect is facing burglary and criminal mischief charges; the church priest says he'll pray for her.
