RED LODGE, Mont. -

PERSONNEL AND RESOURCES ON THE FIRE: Approximately 90 personnel with 20 Type 6 Engines and 2 Bulldozers are working on the fire located 5 miles south of Red Lodge, MT along U.S. Highway 212 near Rock Creek Resort. Fire resources from the Custer N.F., Red Lodge Rural District 7, adjoining rural fire departments and MT DNRC are on scene. The fire is burning in steep heavily timbered terrain. Two bulldozers have built containment line on north flank of the fire.

A Northern Rockies Type 2 Incident Management Team (Pierson) has been ordered for the fire and is expected to arrive today. Additional helicopter air resources have been ordered and heavy air tankers can be called upon if needed.

YESTERDAY’S ACTIVITY: Heavy air tankers dropped fire retardant along the north and western edge of the fire along ridge tops to slow fire growth. A burn out operation was completed along the east side of the fire to remove unburned fuel between the fire’s edge and U.S. Highway 212. One firefighter was injured during initial attack yesterday and transported to Billings Clinic in Red Lodge with non-life threatening injuries.

TOMORROW’S PLANNED ACTIVITY: Transition to the Northern Rockies Type 2 Incident Management Team (Pierson) as soon as they are in place and ready to take over management of the incident.

FIRE WEATHER: Today: A slight chance of thunderstorms after noon. Mostly sunny, with a high near 76. Northwest wind 7 to 10 mph becoming northeast in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 20%. Tonight: A slight chance of thunderstorms. Partly cloudy, with a low around 57. Northeast wind around 6 mph becoming calm in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

CLOSURES & OTHER INFORMATION: U.S. Highway 212 is closed 3 miles south of Red Lodge, MT, with traffic being re-routed onto MT 308 to Belfry, MT. The highway is closed in Wyoming at the Long Lake gate near the bottom of Beartooth Pass. Three residences and Rock Creek Resort in the Rock Creek area have been evacuated and other homeowners have been placed on pre-evacuation notice.
