MARION, Mont. -

Flathead sheriff's officials say it started with an argument outside a duplex off Highway 2 just past Marion. An argument that took a deadly turn, when the victim in the shooting allegedly threatened a man named Mark Ames with a shotgun, before returning to his apartment.

Undersheriff Dave Leib says Ames then responded with his own weapons.

"The suspect went over to the victim's with an AK47 and fired multiple rounds to the front of the victim’s house," says Leib.

We're told the shots fired into the apartment didn't hit the victim, but it was enough to bring him back outside.

"The suspect, Mark Ames, shot the victim with a 32-caliber handgun," says Leib.

Leib says the victim never fired his weapon.

After he was shot, he was taken to Kalispell Regional Medical Center where doctors pronounced him dead.

Police say this isn't the first altercation between the two men.

"There was a restraining order between the two served out of Washington. Sometime ago, and currently there is a restraining order between the two out of Flathead County," says Leib.

In Marion, the news didn't come as a surprise to many people.

Many residents said that they have been hearing about this type of situation happening more often in the area.

Mark Ames is being held at the Flathead County Detention Center. He has been charged with Deliberate Homicide and the investigation is ongoing.
