BILLINGS, Mont. -

A Facebook "safety team" helped spark an investigation that led to rape charges being filed against a 27-year-old Billings man.

Court records say the safety team was alerted to Daniel David Birns' account in January 2012 based on the volume and content of his outgoing correspondence with minors.

Facebook employees found messages between Birns and a then-15-year-old girl that clearly indicated the two had engaged in sexual activity.

The case was referred to Billings police, who interviewed the girl. Prosecutors charge Birns with having a sexual relationship with the girl from the fall of 2011 through January 2012.

Birns was charged with two counts of sexual intercourse without consent during an initial appearance in Justice Court on Wednesday. His bail was set at $10,000.
