A dust storm has closed 17 miles of I-15 between Idaho Falls and Roberts.
Reduced visibility caused by blowing dust has closed Interstate 15 between Idaho Falls and Roberts, the Idaho Transportation Department announced.
I-15 closed from milepost 119 to 135 at 10:09 a.m. Monday.
Northbound traffic is being detoured from I-15 to U.S. 20 in Idaho Falls and then from U.S. 20 in Rigby to Idaho 48, which runs to Roberts and I-15.
Southbound traffic is being detoured from I-15 to Idaho 48 in Roberts and from Idaho 48 to U.S. 20 in Rigby, then south to I-15 in Idaho Falls.
The transportation department estimates the interstate will reopen this evening, when the wind is expected to subside.
The National Weather Service issued a high wind warning: "Southwest winds of 30 to 40 mph will continue through about noon before becoming west-northwest and decreasing slightly to 25 to 35 mph and continuing through 6 p.m."
The Idaho Transportation Department urges motorists to drive with extreme care and observe traffic signs and signals. High winds create highly dangerous driving conditions. Drivers are encouraged to visit 511.idaho.gov or call 5-1-1 for the latest highway conditions.
