GALLATIN GATEWAY, Mont. -

Rep. Steve Daines toured Montana Reclaimed Lumber in Gallatin Gateway, south of Bozeman on Wednesday.

He talked about the impact of international transport regulations on the business and Montana's lumber industry. He said timber products create thousands of jobs in the state, but said regulations stop some of the timber harvest.

He wants to make changes so the State can better manage this renewable resource.

"One of the most important industries in Montana is our timber products. They create thousands of jobs in Montana," Daines said, "but when I was growing up in Montana we had 30 active sawmills; today we only have 11. That's due to the regulations, and these lawsuits that are from these fringe groups that are killing our timber industry in Montana."

Daines will continue his tour Thursday in Billings, meeting with area energy leaders. On Friday, he will be in Butte, to discuss federal regulations on Montana's start-ups and small businesses.
