HELENA, Mont. -

Montana's commissioner of political practices says a Helmville legislator broke campaign laws by coordinating with a secretive conservative group in the 2010 Republican primary.

Commissioner Jonathan Motl says in his ruling that Rep. Mike Miller "turned his campaign over" to Western Tradition Partnership and its agent, Direct Mail and Communications Inc.

Motl says that ruling and five others released Thursday are a warning to candidates in 2014 not to coordinate with corporations.

The commissioner referred his findings to the Lewis and Clark County attorney's office for possible penalties.

Miller said in an email Thursday there was no coordination between himself and any third-party group.

WTP, now called American Tradition Partnership, is a nonprofit corporation that has mailed attack ads against moderate Republican candidates since the 2008 elections.
