MISSOULA, Mont. -

People across western Montana are ready to ring in the New Year, and some celebrations will include lighting off fireworks Tuesday night.

In Missoula, lighting fireworks off in the city limits is illegal, but last month city council members decided to allow for a few exceptions. Smoke bombs, snakes, and sparklers will be allowed but fines for bigger fireworks could put a dent in your wallet.

A first offense ticket will cost $100 plus court costs.  A second offense (during the same calendar year as the first) will cost $300.

Fireworks are illegal on all Fish, Wildlife and Parks lands.  Anyone using fireworks on FWP lands may be charged with a misdemeanor that can result in a fine up to $500.
