Butte mining maps to be digitally preserved

A $2,500 grant will allow the digital preservation of mining maps in the Butte area dating to the 1860s.
Archives Director Ellen Crain says the grant from the Montana History Foundation will allow the preservation of original plats, lodes and placers.
She says the digital versions will eventually be available to the public.
She tells the Montana Standard (http://bit.ly/11v2YP7) in a story published Saturday that there are about 500 to 600 maps.
Crain says they show the evolution of mining development in the area's earliest days when people started arriving looking for gold.
