CHESTER, Mont. -

Officials in Liberty County say the body of a Great Falls eye doctor who did not return from a fishing trip at Lake Elwell last week has surfaced.

Undersheriff Doug Riggin says the body of 50-year-old John Kumm surfaced at about 9 a.m. Friday, about 20 yards from shore. The water is about 15 feet deep in the area. Riggin said search and rescue crews had dragged that area several times after Kumm was reported missing on June 6.

The body was sent to the state crime lab in Missoula for an autopsy.

Officials have said they believe Kumm drowned while swimming after the boat because it drifted away from shore while he parked his pickup truck.

Lake Elwell was created by Tiber Dam and is about 20 miles southwest of Chester.
