With a 200 parking spot deficit in Whitefish, city officials are trying to figure out how to fix the problem.

City council members met Monday night to talk about adding surface parking or building a parking garage adjacent to city hall. The council wants to renovate city hall at its current location, and are currently considering the two options after a results from a feasibility study returned.

City Manager Chuck Stearns gave the council a list of pros and cons. He said surface parking at city hall would only add around 20 spots, but a parking structure can be pricey.

"This might be one of the top economic development expenditures that the city could do to help continue the growth of downtown," said Stearns. "They have most of the information that they need and I think they need to just gather their thoughts."

There will be a public hearing on the parking project at a city council meeting on May 20.
