A University of Montana study finds that Beartooth Highway visitors generate $13.6 million a year and 176 jobs for Red Lodge and Carbon County.
The study by the university's Institute for Tourism Recreation Research was presented Tuesday to the Red Lodge Chamber of Commerce.
The Billings Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/13WgjBT ) the figures are based on a survey of visitors taken at three locations along the highway.
The money generated is of particular interest since Yellowstone National Park announced it would delay plowing of the road's Wyoming section by two weeks to due to automatic federal budget cuts.
Bob Thomas runs Red Lodge's Comfort Inn. He says the communities should come up with an alternative to guarantee the road is plowed.
