Two overdue skiers were found safe Sunday morning after getting caught in an avalanche and spending a night in Hyalite Canyon.
Lieutenant Jason Jarrett with Search and Rescue said the skiers- from Big Timber and Idaho- were first reported missing by family around 10:30 pm Saturday night.
Gallatin County SAR was dispatched to Hyalite Canyon, but snowfall and wind prevented them from searching for the two males.
SAR resumed their search Sunday morning at 5:30 am, and they found the men three hours later.
The skiers told SAR they triggered an avalanche, and one man slid down a couple hundred vertical feet. The slide buried the man's ski, and he was not able to descend down the mountain.
The two took shelter behind a rock for the night.
Sheriff Brian Gootkin said the pair took all the necessary steps to survive- such as traveling with a partner, and letting someone know their whereabouts.
