Senate backs bill allowing guns at colleges
LEWIS AND CLARK COUNTY
The Montana Senate is backing a plan that directs colleges to allow students to carry guns on campus.
The Republican-led chamber endorsed the measure Wednesday in a 28-22 vote.
House Bill 240 would curb the Montana Board of Regents' authority to restrict firearms on college campuses.
Supporters argue that students should be allowed to carry guns and protect themselves.
Opponents say more guns on college campus won't make students safer. They say the measure also faces potential legal issues since the Montana Constitution grants the regents autonomy over the college system.
The measure must return to the House so it can review a Senate amendment that would allow the regents to establish a college permitting system for concealed weapons.
