The U.S. Department of Transportation charged Rimrock Stages with unsafe transportation after a fatal accident killed two passengers last January.
A 24-month report ending on February 22, 2012, diagnosed where the company was lacking safety standards.
NBC Montana dug into the report by going to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) website. From there you can do an advanced search for Rimrock Stages.
The report is called a safety measurement system (SMS) and it outlines seven behavior analysis and safety improvement categories. Rimrock failed the crash category and scored poorly on the vehicle maintenance category.
The bus company was warned that it would need 11 different improvements including improvements to their cargo compartments and bus alignment.
The stranded passengers we spoke with over the weekend told us the buses they were traveling on had tape on the windshields, cracks in the siding, and one bus was missing a cargo door.
