Talk of tougher gun control laws is prompting a rush on ammunition -- a problem for recreational shooters and law enforcement.
"Nobody can get us ammunition at this point," Sgt. Jason LaCross said. "I talked to the Sheriff's Department and [they said] duty ammunition is a year out."
LaCross has ordered ammunition for the Bozeman Police Department for the last four years. He says he's never seen anything like this.
"A lot of the manufacturers are so far behind that they're not even giving ammunition quotes to departments, so that we know what we have to pay for handgun ammunition or rifle ammunition."
He says when he tried to place an order for practice rounds on Thursday, multiple suppliers told him he was out of luck.
"We have no estimated time on when it will even be available," LaCross said.
When ammo finally is available, high prices could seriously squeeze the department's budget.
"The other options are to reduce the amount of training and things like that," he said. "But that's not something we really want to do."
LaCross says the police department has plenty of higher quality, more expensive ammunition on hand -- to be used by officers on duty. But they only have two or three months of practice ammo left, before they'll run out.
"Hopefully things will get better within those couple of months," he said.
