National association source of $500K Hill donation
LEWIS AND CLARK COUNTY
The Republican Governor's Association is the source of a disputed $500,000 donation made to gubernatorial candidate Rick Hill.
The Montana Republican Party donated the money to former congressman Rick Hill on Oct. 4 but had declined to say where it came from.
A campaign finance report filed Thursday shows the national organization gave $685,000 to the state party between Oct. 3 and Oct. 4.
The $500,000 donation was made during a six-day period between a federal judge's Oct. 3 ruling striking down the state's contribution limits and an appeals court's Oct. 9 block of that ruling.
Hill's opponent, Democrat Steve Bullock, is suing Hill to force him to return the money. A judge has ordered Hill to not spend the donation before a Monday hearing.
