BILLINGS, Mont. -

Wildfires in southeastern Montana have forced evacuations in Lame Deer, a town of 2,000 residents and the seat of the Northern Cheyenne tribe.

Evacuations in the reservation town and north in Jimtown were ordered Thursday night after the 94-square-mile Chalky Fire burned two homes and closed Highway 39 between Lame Deer and Colstrip.

Tribal disaster and emergency services coordinator Ed Joiner said crews were able to prevent additional homes from being destroyed overnight.

Meanwhile, the Sarpy Hill complex of fires northeast of Crow Agency has burned 80 square miles.

Residents east of Crow Agency fled when strong wind gusts overnight pushed the fire toward their homes.
