MISSOULA, Mont. -

Big Sky Brewing Company has drawn some criticism for its support of HB 616, which would require some Montana breweries to pay for a $100,000 state license. Tavern owners have supported the bill because some say it would put breweries and taverns on a level playing field.

In a Facebook posting, Big Sky Brewing Company staff explain why they chose to support of the bill. They explained that under the current law, and unlike other breweries, the company cannot sell glasses of beer to drink at the brewery. The company, instead, is allowed to hand out up to four 6 oz. samples of their beer.

An online petition opposing Big Sky’s support of the bill has emerged. The author invites folks to boycott Big Sky. Brewers have argued that the bill calls for unnecessary financial burden on the industry.
