FARMINGTON, Utah -

A 24-year-old Bountiful man accused of killing his mother and stuffing her body in a freezer in 2006 has been ruled not guilty by reason of insanity.

Judge John Morris ruled Monday that Jeremy Hauck should be placed in state custody. His lawyer says Hauck could spend the rest of his life at Utah State Hospital.

Hauck was charged with first-degree murder in the slaying of his mother, Laura Hauck, at their Bountiful home. She was shot twice in the head and her throat was cut. Police found her body in a basement freezer.

Hauck was arrested two days later in his mother's car in Missoula, Mont.

Defense attorney Todd Utzinger said Hauck believed his mother was a "replicant" and not his mother at the time of her death.
