Montana police say a burglary suspect who was shot and died after stealing a patrol car and striking an officer was hit once in the torso as he drove away.
Police Chief Rich St. John identified the man on Monday as 29-year-old Daniel Brawley of Billings.
St. John says the cause of death remains under investigation. Police have said it was unclear if he died as a result of being shot or from a crash that followed.
Brawley was in the back of a patrol car when authorities say he somehow slipped out of his plastic handcuffs, climbed over a partition into the driver's seat and attempted to flee.
Authorities say police Officer Dave Punt was knocked down by the car but got up and fired nine times at Brawley before the car crashed.
A police review board will determine if the shooting was justified.
