A semi-truck trailer ran over and killed a man on the University of Montana campus Friday afternoon, according to the Missoula County Coroner’s office.
The accident happened near the loading dock behind the University Center.
A bystander reportedly watched the 60-year-old wait until the truck’s cab drove by and then jump underneath the trailer.
Investigators said the man sustained extensive chest injuries after being crushed by the back tires.
A witness said the man had been hanging around that area of campus over the last few days.
The accident happened around 12 p.m., as many students were breaking for lunch.
"All the emergency services were here, and they were surrounding someone who, it looked like, was almost under a tire,” said UM student Sean Kirkpatrick. “They were just all surrounding him, and they brought over a stretcher from an ambulance."
The man was transported to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Montana Highway Patrol troopers are leading the investigation, which is still ongoing. They say they don’t anticipate citing the truck driver.
The coroner’s office is waiting until they can notify the man’s family before they release his name.
