KALISPELL, Mont. -

Kalispell police officers say a 40-year old Kalispell man died after he was shot multiple times in a Northwest Kalispell neighborhood. According to officers, 911 dispatchers received multiple calls reporting several gunshots in the Empire Estates Subdivision at roughly 8:40 on Saturday night.

According to the Kalispell Police, officers found a 40-year old man shot several times. Officers detained a 24-year old Kalispell man for questioning during the investigation, but he was later released.

Kalispell Police Chief Roger Nasset says the victim died from his wounds after he was transported to Kalispell Regional Medical Center.

According to Nasset, the Kalispell Major Crime Unit and detectives are conducting interviews and searching the crime scene to figure out what exactly happened.

Kalispell officers haven’t released the name of the victim pending family notification.

Nasset says decisions regarding criminal charges will be made as the investigation moves forward.

On Sunday, NBC Montana caught up with several neighbors in the area. Tom Odonnell was watching TV when he heard the shots.

“There were three shots, two really close together and then a very very short pause and a third.” said Odonnell.

Odonnell says he saw a woman sobbing, asking someone to call 911. Odonnell says a different neighbor came from across the street and made the call.

Two cousins tell NBC Montana they were across the street celebrating a birthday party when shots rang out. At first, they thought the sounds were fireworks.

“Then we heard screams and then we knew it was a gun,” said Sarah Rice, in town visiting her cousin.

“I went to go shut the door and lock it,” said Kalispell resident Margie Malaga. “Then, we all went and locked the sliding door behind us and we turned off all the lights because we thought maybe the guy was going to come hide in our house.”

NBC Montana will update this article as more information becomes available.
