KALISPELL, Mont. -

A Kalispell mountain biker came home with a medal in hand after placing second in his class. He also wasn’t the only Montana on the trails earlier this month in the USA Cycling Mountain Bike Cross Country National Championships in Sun Valley, Idaho.

Kalispell’s Joel Shehan competed alongside Missoula’s Sam Schultz, who will be competing in the Olympics this year. Shehan raced his way to second place in the Amateur Men’s race, and Schultz placed first in the pro class. Shehan believes that having Schultz in the Olympics is great for Montana.

“That’s pretty exciting for those of us in the mountain biking community, and those of us in Montana, to have one of our Montanans over there representing the country,” said Shehan.

Shehan also competed in the competition last year, and managed to place sixth, even after taking a spill off his bike.
