Jefferson City man gets 5 years for animal cruelty
A southwestern Montana man convicted of 91 counts of animal cruelty for conditions at his malamute breeding operation has been sentenced to 30 years under the supervision of the Department of Corrections with 25 suspended.
Mike Chilinski of Jefferson City was sentenced Wednesday by District Judge Loren Tucker in Boulder. Chilinski, who is 52, is not allowed to own any animals for 30 years.
Tucker ordered the now 176 malamutes forfeited to Jefferson County, which plans to find homes for them through rescue groups.
A restitution hearing will be held later. The Humane Society of the United States said it spent more than $377,000 in caring for the dogs since Chilinski's October 2011 arrest.
Chilinski has pleaded guilty to a federal marijuana charge and faces a five-year sentence in April.
