BOZEMAN, Mont. -

Gallatin County authorities say they rescued an injured skier at high altitude in the backcountry.

The Gallatin County Sheriff's Office says the 21-year-old skier from Bozeman fell into rocks on Blackmore Mountain Sunday afternoon and injured his back, ribs and hip.

One of his four companions contacted emergency dispatchers, which sent out a search-and-rescue team.

Rescuers reached the summit of a ridge by helicopter and skied to where the victim was at 9,600 feet.

The victim, who was not named, was transported by litter and lowered by ropes to a landing zone and taken by helicopter to a command post at the trailhead.

The sheriff's office says he was then taken to a Bozeman hospital, where his condition is not known.
