A Missoula businessman ran a newspaper ad offering an illegally large campaign contribution to anyone interested in running to unseat four school board members who supported a large raise for the superintendent.
John Suprock's ad offered a campaign contribution of up to $10,000 to potential candidates.
Mary Baker with the Commissioner of Political Practices office called Suprock Thursday to tell him the campaign contribution limit is $160 after one of the board members sent her the ad.
Suprock said Baker told him he could spend as much money as he wants in support of any candidate as long as he doesn't coordinate his efforts with that candidate.
The board voted 6-4 in January to give Superintendent Alex Apostle a 30 percent raise over three school years.
