HELENA, Mont. -

The Montana Highway Patrol is welcoming nine new troopers to its ranks.

They are graduating from the 54th Advanced Academy class in a Friday ceremony in Helena.

Six of the nine are headed to eastern Montana and communities that are dealing with the effects of the Bakken oil boom.

Attorney General Tim Fox's spokesman says they will be replacing troopers who have been in the area for some time, so there will be no net personnel gain in the Bakken communities.

John Barnes says Fox believes additional investments in law enforcement are needed there to protect public safety and the attorney general will work with the Legislature to get those resources.

The graduation ceremony is at 9 a.m. at the Red Lion Colonial Hotel.
