Attorney General Tim Fox has spent his first days in office reviewing cases, setting a legislative agenda and fielding requests to join lawsuits against the federal government.
The 55-year-old attorney general recently spoke to The Associated Press in a wide-ranging interview.
Fox is the first Republican in 20 years to hold the office and the only one among Montana's five statewide elected officeholders.
Fox says his staff regularly coordinates with Gov. Steve Bullock's on major legal issues.
But differences have arisen. Fox announced on Feb. 14 that Montana would join a lawsuit with 10 other states to challenge a law meant to strengthen financial regulations after the 2008 meltdown.
Bullock's office says the governor would not have taken that course, but he respects the independence of the attorney general.
