The U.S. Forest Service is seeking public comments about its 5,640-acre Como Forest Health Project in western Montana in the Bitterroot National Forest.
The agency wants to log 1,860 acres and complete non-commercial thinning on 330 acres as part of a plan it says will improve forest health between Lake Como and Lost Horse Road. The timber sale portion is located north of Darby.
Darby District Ranger Chuck Oliver tells the Ravalli Republic (http://bit.ly/VG9HT2) the project is intended to protect large-diameter ponderosa pine trees from growing populations of mountain pine beetle.
Officials say the thinning will also help protect remaining trees from wildfire.
