Missoula and Ravalli County veterans marked Flag Day by retiring more than 900 flags Thursday.
The Veteran’s Affairs Council holds the special ceremony twice a year.
The flags burned Thursday were worn beyond repair by years of blowing in the winds of western Montana.
American Legion Member Richard Wherley said it’s an honor to be able to participate in the ceremony, especially with his son by his side.
"Our forefathers of this country fought for this flag, and our flag means a lot to us," said Wherley.
Wherley’s son, Derek, is also a member of the American Legion.
"It's definitely an honor to be present at funerals, and events like this to honor the United States and all those who serve," said Wherley.
The United Veterans Council will hold their next flag retirement ceremony on Pearl Harbor Day in December.
