Officials are ordering mandatory evacuations for residents of 20 to 30 houses threatened by a 5-square-mile wildfire burning in rural southern Montana.
The order from Stillwater County commissioners Thursday covers the Hermit Creek subdivision and a five-mile stretch of Shane Creek Road south of Columbus.
Firefighters reported making progress on the Skibstad Fire on Thursday, with estimates that it is now 35 percent contained. However, the north end of the blaze is expected to continue spreading amid high temperatures and wind.
A shelter for evacuees is set up at Columbus High School.
