MISSOULA, Mont. -

DNRC crews are working on a fire that started late Monday afternoon, near the Maclay Ranch.

Smoke from the McClain creek fire can be spotted for miles. Officials say it broke out around 5:30 Monday evening.

A DNRC helicopter helped initially but was released later Monday night. Now engines and a twenty person hand crew are working on the fire.

Fire leaders say they've stopped forward progress on the 3.5 acre blaze.

"They've got a lot of work to do ahead of them…now comes the work of putting in hand line and getting the fire line and working on containment. So they'll most likely be out there all night," said DNRC spokesperson Cynthia Super.

An investigator is on the scene, a cause has not been determined.
